CAPE TOWN – An Italian businessman’s multimillion rand donation to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust will double the capacity in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Earlier this week Diego Biasi, CEO of European-based company Quercus, donated through his foundation R10 million to the trust.

Biasi is planning to donate a further R27 million in the next two years which will go towards the upgrading of the facility’s ICU.

The trust’s Ronell Jordaan says the donation will help increase the ICU’s capacity, which is 100 percent full right through the year.

“What the upgrade will mean is that there will be more beds available so you don’t have to scurry around to find a bed for an emergency as it’s there already.”

She added that they won’t need to cancel or postpone elective surgery.

Biasi’s donation is in honour of his late friend and co-founder of the company, Simone Borla, who passed away last year due to lung cancer.
