HIV gel trial is halted

It was hailed as a pioneering breakthrough, giving hope to millions of sufferers and medical professionals alike.

But a new trial into a gel which scientists thought could block the HIV and Aids virus has been cancelled after researchers reported it was not working.

Despite working surprisingly well in a previous trial, the gel apparently did not have the same success rate in this latest study – something which has baffled scientists.

The trial’s failure has dealt a crushing blow to those working in Aids research, many of whom hoped this microbicide gel would be a significant development in halting the deadly virus.

When scientists revealed the new gel last year, they believed it would block the Aids virus and halve a woman’s chance of getting HIV from an infected partner
