Health department sued for R235m

Gauteng health department is being sued by patients and their families for a whopping R235m. This was revealed in the latest report to the public accounts committee of the Gauteng provincial legislature.

The report shows that the department faces 101 claims for damages. All the claims relate to medical negligence that allegedly took place at various hospitals across the province.

The main culprit seems to be Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, which faces 26 claims totalling R22.8m. Seventeen of them are related to alleged negligence that led to brain damage and cerebral palsy in new-born babies.
