In many companies, when you accept their offer, you are compelled, as a condition of employment to join their designated medical aid scheme.
In the good old days, it was better for the employer to provide this benefit than the employee to make their own arrangements. The employer negotiated preferential rates with the medical aid scheme for the benefit of their workforce. The employer was liable and made the contribution on behalf to the employee.
