Hospitals sued for negligence

A housewife from Mokopane is claiming R615 000 in damages from the Office of the Premier of Limpopo, saying she could lose her foot because she developed gangrene two weeks after an operation to her left ankle.

Cornelia Wentzel, 48, is blaming the two provincial hospitals that treated her for her medical problems.

She alleges the doctors and nursing staff at both hospitals were negligent.

She stated in papers before the Pretoria High Court that she was admitted to the Lephalale provincial hospital on October 21, 2005, after she seriously injured her ankle.

Later that day, staff at the hospital referred her to the Polokwane provincial hospital, where she had an operation the next day.

Wentzel said she was discharged on the day of the surgery.
