Plans to build elite hospital slammed

he government’s plan to build a multimillion-rand elite military hospital for cabinet members and visiting VIPs was on Tuesday night slammed by opposition parties and Cosatu as wasteful and unnecessary.

The hospital, which has been labelled an “executive military health facility”, is to be built in the Bryntirion ministerial estate in Pretoria out of a R356-million fund allocated by the Treasury to upgrade the compound over three years.

The hospital is to cost R62m over the period and will serve the president, cabinet ministers and visiting dignitaries.

The facility, already under construction, will cost R13m this year.

Critics have condemned the plan, saying that in addition to the government showing no faith in the planned National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, it seemed the country’s private hospitals were now no longer good enough.
