Police are investigating allegations that striking public servants kidnapped a nurse from Stanger Hospital and threatened to kill her if the hospital was not completely shut down on Monday.

Health Department spokesman Chris Maxon said the nursing manager received a call from a person who identified herself as a nurse who had been sent to Stanger Hospital by an agency contracted to provide nursing personnel during the strike. The nurse phoned in to report that she had been abducted by strikers and did not know where she was.

She said the strikers had demanded she call the hospital and tell them to shut down
operations and release their workers, failing which they would kill her. The call was then cut off, said Maxon.

Police Colonel Jay Naicker said officers found the nurse at about 1.30pm and she said she was unharmed.
