SuperSport Corporate Soccer League raises awareness on Prostate Cancer
November 20 2008
SuperSport Corporate Soccer League reintroduces the National Corporate Soccer League as part of its ongoing commitment to the Prostate Cancer Foundation in raising awareness about Prostate Cancer. This collaboration is made possible by a generous sponsorship from Pro Sano Medical Scheme and will bring exciting activities at selected venues throughout the country to the soccer fraternity.
Sporting events have a crucial role to play in the efforts of the Prostate Cancer Foundation to raise awareness about this disease and to improve the lives of people living with Prostate Cancer. Sport builds bridges between individuals and across communities, providing a fertile ground for sowing the seeds of knowledge and empowerment. SuperSport Corporate Soccer League and Pro Sano Medical Scheme recognize this and wish to endorse the cause and vision of the Prostate Cancer Foundation, with this pro-active initiative.
The regional play-offs promise great soccer with the teams winning their respective leagues – four teams from Gauteng, three teams from Cape Town and the winning side from KwaZulu- Natal – participating in the national finals in Johannesburg December 6 to the 7th. The top teams will be sponsored in terms of accommodation, flights and meals and R30 000 is up for grabs for the winning team! But, besides great soccer the events promise to be entertaining and fun – with celebrity soccer exhibitions and various other activities. Soccer players and fans will be given the opportunity to learn more about Prostate Cancer and encouraged to partake in Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening opportunities offered by the Prostate Cancer Foundation at the soccer venues!
PSA is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of the PSA in the blood. PSA screening is an approved test along with a digital rectal exam to help detect prostate cancer. The higher a mans PSA level, the more likely it is that cancer is present although there are other possible reasons for an elevated PSA level.
The sponsorships and prizes for the teams, the PSA screening opportunities and the various other educational activities have been made possible through the generous support of Pro Sano Medical Scheme who, like the SuperSport Corporate Soccer League, share the vision of the Prostate Cancer Foundation to engage all South Africans through education, awareness, advocacy and research in addressing the prevention, treatment and ultimately cure of prostate cancer.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation targets all South Africans from every geographical, ethnic, cultural, religious and economic background. Special attention is paid to men over the age of 45 whose risk increases with advancing age. The organization recognizes that such men are part of a larger community and do not exist in isolation.
The Prostate Cancer Foundation is guided by the belief that accurate and early diagnosis, a well-informed medical fraternity and an informed motivated patient will ensure low mortality and better quality of life for those diagnosed. SuperSport Corporate Soccer League is proud to be part of this partnership and initiative.
