The South African National Council for the Blind is the umbrella body of over 95 member organisations, representing over 724 000 (Census 2001) South Africans with visual impairments.

- Every 5 seconds someone goes needlessly blind.
- At least 70% of all blind people have some sight, in other words are partially sighted - also sometimes referred to as people with low vision?
- Only a very small percentage of 'blind people' are Braille users?
- Blind people who are Braille users have a far greater chance of succeeding in higher education and employment situations?
- 95% of blind people living in South Africa are illiterate and have little or no access to education?
